Frank Evans was born December 6, 1921 in Linden, Alabama. Throughout his many years of baseball experience, he has worn many hats, played multiple positions, coached for several teams, and scouted talent for others. His contribution to baseball is recognized by so many of the players that once played alongside him on the fields of the great Negro Leagues as well as those that crossed paths with him in the majors. His career has spanned many decades.

In 1949 and 1950 Frank Evans took the field with the Cleveland Buckeyes and then ventured to Canada to play baseball and football. He returned to the Cleveland Buckeyes for the remainder of the 1951 season. At this point in his career, Evans went south to New Orleans until the early part of 1954 when he traveled to the Texas League, the Cleveland Indians and a Chicago Cubs AAA team. Going full circle, Frank returned to the Birmingham Black Barons where he managed in 1961 and 1962.

Evans recalls the 1962 East-West All-Star game. After five innings of play amidst the outbreak of intermittent torrential rains, the game had to finally be called. The fans were refunded their admission as they departed the stadium disappointed. The cancellation left the organization in a serious financial bind. Evans recalls being led downtown where he was graciously loaned 10,000 dollars to aid the franchises effort to continue the tour. He immediately booked several more games for the upcoming weeks and before the tour was completed, the debt was paid in full.

Frank's vast experience was a commodity that many of the major league teams found invaluable. He offered his services as an instructor and a scout for teams throughout the 1960's and early 70's. These teams included the Cleveland Indians (1963), the Chicago Cubs (1964-65), the Montreal Expos (1967) and the Kansas City Royals (1968-72).

As late as the early 2000's, Mr. Evans was still rolling along in Montgomery, Alabama, offering his baseball knowledge and wisdom to the Montgomery Red Wings.
